ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont set out to break a record for the world’s largest square dance, but it didn’t quite square up to what they thought.

While the singing was swell, the rain ruined what could’ve been a legendary night.

Nonetheless, fairgoers were swinging and dancing and having a jolly time. Especially dancers Mack and Cindy, who say they’ve been getting down together for a long time, but not long enough.

“It’s just fun being close together,” said Cindy.

“We enjoy the music and dancing with people,” said Mack.

The honky tonk had performances from Bob Wagner, Mike Gordon, Kat Wright, and others. The fair wanted to break the record of 1,600 people, but fewer than a few hundred showed out in the wet conditions.
