WINTERSET, Iowa —

The unofficial results of Madison County's special election for the county auditor position are in.

According to the unofficial results from the auditor's office, Independent Michele Brant has won with 2,203 votes, or 70.23% of the ballots.

Republican Matthew T. Schwarz received 927 votes, or 29.55% of the ballots.

The results will be official after a canvas on Sept. 2.

Schwarz has been serving in the role of county auditor since being appointed last month by the county board of supervisors to replace former auditor Teri Kaczinski, who resigned in early July.
