HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Students in Hartford are walking on safer streets as they head back to school, according to city officials.

The Hartford Police Department has released data stating that crime is down in the capital city, and leaders in the city are working to encourage positive environments.

There have been only seven murders in Hartford so far this year, and police have made arrests in six of those cases.

Last year, Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam (D) opened up the Office of Violence Prevention, which targets those most at risk for violence and intervenes.

"Police working closely with the community, it's really making this city the safest it's been on record, we have never had numbers like this recorded in the city of Hartford,” Arulampalam said.
