KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen ISD school board voted 3-2 on Tuesday, Aug. 26 against creating a School Library Advisory Council, or SLAC, opting instead to establish a policy giving board members final approval over which books are accepted into district libraries.
The decision comes ahead of Sept. 1, when Senate Bill 13 goes into effect. The law gives school districts the option to form SLACs — local groups that include parents and community members — to review and recommend library materials. However, the law does not require districts to do so.
More than 50 people, including local librarians, signed a petition opposing the creation of a SLAC, arguing the group would add unnecessary oversight and slow down access to books.
