CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Former Charlotte Motor Speedway president and general manager Humpy Wheeler was laid to rest Tuesday. NASCAR chairman Jim France called wheeler a “visionary,” whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in racing. Tuesday morning, people came to honor Wheeler’s legacy at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church on Providence Road in south Charlotte.
“Humpy knew himself. He knew who he was and what he believed. He led both as father and as professional by his example. Most of all, he was there to do what he believed he ought to do and had been sent to do. Therefore, he was who he was, and he was generous,” said Abbot Placid Solari of Belmont Abbey and Chancellor of Belmont Abbey College.
Wheeler passed away last Wednesday at the age of 86.
