Two well-heeled state employees filed nominating petitions Tuesday to run for mayor of Santa Fe. If they qualify for the November ballot, both have clearance from their bosses to keep working, provided they don't campaign on state time.
One candidate, Oscar Rodríguez, is chief financial officer of the New Mexico Finance Authority, a job that pays him $197,000 a year. Santa Fe's next mayor will collect $117,000 annually.
The other candidate is Tarin Nix, who makes $168,500 a year as deputy commissioner of public affairs at the State Land Office. She submitted a conflict-of-interest disclosure statement to her supervisor more than a year ago, though Nix at the time said she was not sure she would run for mayor.
