Authorities have arrested a Maine man who spent more than a year as a fugitive for allegedly lying about his medical condition to the VA to obtain financial benefits, officials said Monday.

The US Marshals Service said Gregory Heimann, 51, was arrested Aug. 21 at an Amtrak station in La Plata, Mo.

He made an initial appearance last week in federal court in that state, where his case was transferred to Maine. He’ll appear for arraignment at a later date, records show.

A lawyer for Heimann couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The Marshals Service said Heimann “disappeared from his residence after taking a canoe with his belongings to a river near the Canadian border” on April 19, 2024.
