IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Wednesday kicks off the second We Give Blood Drive contest, the Big Ten conference’s 18 schools are competing for most blood donations.

Donations are counted through the end of the football season in early December. The winning school gets $1 million, that prize goes toward community and student health projects on campus.

The goal is to encourage people to donate for the first time with hopes for some to become consistent donors.

“You’re still saving a life, even though it might be a little uncomfortable, just come on out and and give it a try,” Mandy McClenahan with the DeGowin Blood Center said.

McClenahan said DeGowin saw a 20% increase in donations thanks to last year’s contest. The University of Iowa placed 6th in last year’s contest, collecting 1,215 dona
