HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Beat the Heat: Senior Event is aimed at educating senior citizens in the Rio Grande Valley on how to stay safe from the summer heat.

Hosted by Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension, the event will provide preventative education and emergency bags to the first 65 attendees.

The bags will include essential items like water, blood pressure monitors, and legal document envelopes. Superior Health Plan, which serves 2 million Texas residents, has granted $200,000 to Prairie View for these initiatives.

The event will feature 20 vendors offering health screenings and resources, and will take place at the San Juan Community Resource Center from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Raffle prizes include generators, AC units, and fans.
