Heavy smoke from a warehouse fire in Midtown was blowing onto Interstate 64 (Highway 40) on Wednesday morning, causing cars to back up in the eastbound lanes.

Firefighters also asked that Metro tracks to the south be shut down.

The St. Louis Fire Department said the fire, reported before 10 a.m., was in an abandoned two-story brick warehouse on South Vandeventer Avenue and Market Street.

When fire crews first arrived, they saw flames shooting through the roof of the building.

No injuries were reported.

The Fire Department said the fire had been knocked down by about 10:40 a.m.
