Kate is a survivor of domestic violence; she had to flee to Alabama to escape her abuser. She lost her teeth not only from the abuse she endured but also from underlying medical issues. For a long time, smiling was something she avoided.

Kate Wright said, "I was self-sheltered, I just would not go out of my home, and if I did, I wore a mask. I was very embarrassed because people have a judgment about people who don't have teeth."
