Travel advisories remain in place for U.S. residents planning to visit Mexico, amid what’s being described by officials as an increased risk of terrorist acts south of the border.

About 13 million Americans visit Mexico each year, according to the latest alert, posted Aug. 12 by federal officials. Existing warnings were in place concerning crime and kidnappings.

“There is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity,” the U.S. State Department alert stated. “Many violent crimes take place in Mexico. They include homicide, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery.”

Travelers to Mexico are advised to follow the same rules already in place for U.S. government employees in the country:

Do not travel between cities after dark

Only use regulated taxis or ride-sha
