NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Federal transportation officials have promised to start rebuilding Penn Station by 2027.
The federal government in April announced it would take over the construction of a new Penn Station from the MTA. The Department of Transportation said the move will save taxpayer dollars.
“We can’t wait any longer,” said Andy Byford, special advisor to the Amtrak board. “This is a very aggressive timeframe.”
Gov. Kathy Hochul said she requested the federal government fund the “long-overdue” project.
Federal officials said they have officially started soliciting a developer for the project, made possible with a $43 million grant to Amtrak. The grant will pay for developer solicitation and early engineering and permitting work.
