IOWA CITY — It went poorly for UAlbany the last time it faced a Mark Gronowski-led football team.

The Great Danes fell 59-0 to Mark Gronowski and the eventual champion South Dakota State Jackrabbits in the FCS semifinals in 2023. The program hasn’t recovered.

Despite securing an 11-4 record in 2023 and advancing the furthest in the playoffs than any prior season at the Division I level, UAlbany failed to keep the momentum going and suffered a disastrous 4-8 record last season. To make matters worse, head coach Greg Gattuso, the mastermind behind 2023’s record season, departed the program in February to become a defensive analyst at Penn State — his alma mater.
