MACOMB (WGEM) - Half a dozen Flock license plate reader (LPR’s) cameras are now active in and around Macomb with a seventh on the way.
Police Chief Jeff Hamer said the cameras only track data and don’t record any driving infractions.
“What we do use is hot lists, so if a stolen vehicle makes it to a hot list and then that vehicle passes in front of, lets say our LPR’s, we would get a ‘ping,’ if you will, on that hot list saying there’s a stolen vehicle in our community,” Hamer said.
Additionally, the cameras aren’t pointed at private property.
For the last six years, Hamer said Macomb Police Department has used a mobile LPR on a squad car.
Police can search data from up to 30 days of a car being recorded. Hamer called the cameras a “force multiplier” for law enforcement.
