MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) - The Navy is starting construction on a new submarine that’s named after our state.
The keel laying ceremony held Wednesday was viewed at five different watch parties throughout Wisconsin. The Navy is building the next generation of submarines, and one of them will carry the name USS Wisconsin.
People gathered at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum to watch the keel laying ceremony, and for many, it was a moment of pride seeing the state’s name join the navy’s new fleet.
“It’s an honor, it’s moving. It touches my heart,” said Navy Veteran Mark Becker.
Becker served in the Navy for 13 years as a cook stationed on aircraft carriers, oil tankers, and submarines.
