LINCOLN, Neb. —

In 1962, Nebraska coach Bob Devaney hired a 25-year-old Hastings native as a graduate assistant. His name was Tom Osborne, and he would go on to be one of the winningest coaches in Division I history.

Osborne spent three seasons in the National Football League, and then he returned to his home state.

He earned a Doctor of Psychology from UNL, and then he decided to coach full-time, and from 1967 to 1971 Osborne was a receivers coach and an offensive coordinator, helping the team to back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971.

It was in 1972 when Devaney announced he would retire the following season, and he handpicked Osborne as his successor.

And the rest is history.
