MAHASKA COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) - The trial for a former Keokuk County deputy involved in a hayride crash that injured several children continued Wednesday. It included testimony from some of the victims’ parents.

David Heady pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of child endangerment stemming from the 2023 hayride crash. His case was moved to Mahaska County. Prosecutors say Heady owned the ride and was with the driver during the incident. That driver, Daniel Brubaker, pleaded guilty to the same charges last month.

One woman recounted the phone call she got from her child - who was on the hayride - just after the crash happened. She told prosecutors her son is in the same class as Heady’s child. She recalls her son telling her over the phone that he was okay, but his friends were hurt.
