MCKINNEY, Texas — When McKinney ISD students return to class after Labor Day, they’ll walk into classrooms displaying a new poster, the Ten Commandments.

That’s because of Senate Bill 10, a new Texas law requiring all public schools in the state to post the biblical text.

Michelle Lewis, a parent at McGowen Elementary, is among those raising concerns.

Reading a letter aloud at a school board meeting, she urged district leaders to consider the message the posters send.

“Public schools serve children of many faiths,” Lewis said. “The state sends an unintended but clear message that some students belong more than others.”

She said she worries about the lack of choice.

“It feels like I don’t have control over what my kid is seeing," Lewis said.
