Lawyers for Jack Smith , a Central New York native and former Justice Department special counsel, lashed out against an ethics investigation this week, calling the premise of the investigation “imaginary and unfounded.”

Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas requested that Smith be investigated, the Associated Press reported. Smith spent more than two years investigating President Donald Trump.

In a letter to the Office of Special Counsel – a watchdog agency not connected to Smith’s position – Cotton requested that the office conduct an investigation to determine if Smith “unlawfully took political actions to influence the 2024 election to harm then-candidate President Donald Trump. … Many of Smith’s legal actions seem to have no rationale except for an attempt to affect the 2024
