Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by League Two Grimsby after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes.
The home side took the lead when Charles Vernam’s effort beat Andre Onana at his near post, and the United goalkeeper committed another error just eight minutes later as he failed to deal with a cross before Tyrell Warren bundled the ball home.
United introduced Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo at half time and the latter handed United a lifeline with his first goal for the club. Harry Maguire headed United level in the 89th minute.
Clarke Oduor and Matheus Cunha missed in the penalty shootout to send it to sudden death. Mbeumo missed the decisive penalty as Grimsby won the shootout 12-11.
