Ecuador's National Assembly approved the termination of the Migration Statute signed with Venezuela in 2010. The instrument allowed for a simplified procedure for Venezuelan citizens to obtain visas and residency in Ecuadorian territory.
The decision was made this Wednesday with 86 votes in favor, coming from the ruling party, the Social Christian Party (PSC), and Pachakutik. The Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, which promoted the agreement during Rafael Correa's administration, abstained.
The complaint process was requested by the Ecuadorian president, Daniel Noboa, On March 11, arguing that funding cuts had been made for immigration programs. The Legislative International Relations Committee issued a favorable report that allowed the process to move forward.
