COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Baseball great and Sumter native Bobby Richardson is celebrating a milestone.

The community celebrated his 90th birthday party.

It’s been almost 60 years since he played for the Yankees - and coached at USC. He is the only World Series MVP who was playing for the losing team when he won the award, making Bobby Richardson a living legend right here in the Midlands.

Richardson’s family says he has a hard time accepting accolades.

“And in the middle of the night, he woke up, and he said, Betsy, he said, I won’t have to go through that again at my funeral. I said, Robert, you’re not going to be here at your funeral,” said his wife, Betsy Richardson.

While his demeanor is modest, his accomplishments on the baseball field are far from it.
