In the final days of the DePiero farm being run by the longtime North Jersey family, Tammy Palmieri fanned through old photographs, her eyes warming over images of the fields her grandparents once tilled.

Most of the Montvale farm, which was founded in 1924, has vanished. On much of its former land is a giant shopping plaza anchored by grocery retailer Wegman’s . For the few acres left, Thursday ended a chapter that Palmieri said at one point seemed endless.
