DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Paulding County high school student was struck by a car while walking to campus on Wednesday morning, school officials say.

In a letter to parents, South Paulding High principal Ed Thomas said the student was hit on Winn Road in front of Dugan Elementary School, which is right by the high school.

The student is in critical condition at an Atlanta-area hospital, according to the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our school is a tight-knit community, and I am sharing this information so that all of our thoughts and prayers can be dedicated to the families involved,” Thomas said in his letter. “I also want you to know that we will have counselors on hand at the school today and tomorrow for any students or staff who need assistance.”
