OMAHA, Neb. —

The pediatrician in chief for Children's Nebraska warns families that an uptick in COVID-19 cases can occur during the back-to-school season.

National trends show a rise in cases, with the CDC saying that most cases are the newer XFG variant, nicknamed Stratus.

"When we come back to school, kids get back together or have new exposures to other kids that they haven't been around all summer. And so there's a lot of opportunity for them to start sharing some germs," Pediatrician in Chief Kari Simonsen said.

Sarpy and Cass County Health Department told KETV that there is no surge in the positivity rate, according to their jurisdiction. Data from the Nebraska DHHS shows a slight increase in cases in recent weeks compared to previous months in Douglas, Sarpy and Cass countie
