Infections occur when contaminated water enters an open cut. This month, the Florida Department of Health confirmed one infection in Flagler County, marking one of 20 reported in Florida this year.

Infections used to mostly occur on the Gulf Coast, but the CDC reports that between 1988 and 2018, cases along the East Coast surged by 800 percent.
