CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The NAACP Charleston Branch on Thursday will hold a meeting that is expected to focus on affordable housing.

It comes after a Charleston Housing Authority meeting last week that discussed the city’s commitment to expanding housing opportunities and supporting diverse, thriving communities.

The comprehensive affordable housing strategy has a goal of creating 3,500 units by 2032. So far, 178 units have been completed with additional developments and partnerships planned across the peninsula, West Ashley, and Johns Island.

Officials say publicly owned land offers a major opportunity for new development.

There are roughly 888 publicly owned sites on more than 5,700 acres, some of which leaders say could be used for affordable and workforce housing.
