A Wisconsin man who faked his death and fled overseas to be with a woman he met online, leaving his wife and children behind, was convicted of obstructing an officer and sentenced to 89 days in jail.

The sentence’s length is equal to the number of days Ryan Borgwardt, 45, “obstructed law enforcement” as he built a new life in the country of Georgia last year, while authorities back home searched for him, Judge Mark T. Slate said Tuesday in court in Green Lake County. Officials initially believed Borgwardt had drowned in a lake, but came to suspect that he was alive after they found out Canadian authorities had run his name in the days after he disappeared.
