TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - More than 2,000 people are experiencing homelessness throughout southern Arizona , and one of the biggest barriers to finding shelter is that animals can’t always come with them.

Local organizations are stepping up to serve the pets of unhoused people across Pima County through a new mobile veterinary clinic initiative.

The Scarritt Foundation hosted the first PUP Outreach event Friday at Casa Maria Soup Kitchen in South Tucson. The goal of the mobile vet clinic is to offer much-needed care for free, ensuring that unhoused people don’t have to choose between providing for themselves and their pets. During the event, Casa Maria fed more than 100 people, while the mobile clinic offered wellness exams, spays and neuters, and pet food and supplies for 125 pets.
