NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - Students in New Haven headed back into the classroom with plenty of smiles and a few tears on Thursday.

Both kids and parents had some nerves, excitement, and many first day photos.

“First day for third grade, right! Third grade she’s going to have a wonderful day today. Right? Hip hip hooray! Hooray,” said Allen White from New Haven.

New Haven’s mayor and superintendent greeted families outside of Lincoln Basset School with high fives and encouragement.

“For many of our kids, our school is the safest place in their lives, so many staff members that really care about them, fun to see their friends again, a lot of energy, said Mayor Justin Elicker.

Twins Kennadi and Camoria said they’re ready for fourth grade.
