NEW HAVEN, CT. (WFSB) - Thursday marked the first day of school in New Haven.

For thousands of students, that meant getting back on the school bus.

This year, the city is working to make sure kids are even safer by adding cameras to catch drivers refusing to stop for buses.

The cameras will be installed on the stop signs of all school buses in the city.

When the stop sign goes out to drop off or pick up kids, the cameras will activate. If a car passes by, their license plate will be noted and a $250 ticket will be issued.

“They love taking the bus and I love them taking the bus. It’s a great experience,” said Stephanie, New Haven.

The Board of Education approved the installation of the cameras earlier this week.
