TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Leon County Public Works crews returned Thursday night to continue removing colorful crosswalks on Dempsey Mayo Road.

They stopped abruptly Wednesday night after a crowd of seniors from nearby Westminster Oaks started chanting “save our crosswalks,” and one protester laid down in the roadway to try to stop it.

Robin Gray, President of the Westminster Oaks Residents Council, was there.

“They’re really upset. Passionate doesn’t even begin to cover it,” Gray said. “People are upset. They want the safety, they want the ability to cross at any time and know that they can be safe and know the children can be safe.”

There are three colorful crosswalks on Dempsey Mayo Road, including one right in front of W.T. Moore Elementary School. All are painted with the school
