Jim DiBernardo swam from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco when he was in his 40s.
At 71 years old, he’s gonna do it again.
“I am ready to go, I’ve trained hard, I feel good,” said the retired police major.
Dibo, as his friends call him, worked 36 years with the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office. And his public service continues, as these days he’s squarely focused on human trafficking.
“Miami is number four, we are number four in the United States, and there are a lot of people that don’t realize it,” Dibo said. “I suggest that you start opening your eyes to what is going on because one day it could be your son or daughter, or your grandkid.”
On Sunday, Dibo will take part in the Alcatraz Open Swim, from the prison island to the shores of San Francisco.
