An inquiry is to be held into the deaths of two prisoners at Glasgow’s HMP Barlinnie .

Lee McKinsley and Barry Watson died at the Victorian prison in Glasgow’s east end in December 2020. A Fatal Accident Inquiry is to be held into their deaths.

A preliminary hearing will be held at Glasgow Sheriff Court on October 2, 2025.

Aging Barlinnie Prison is under scrutiny after inspectors described it as being in a "wretchedly poor state" following a review which also found the facility to be over 30% above its capacity. HM Inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland (HMIPS) said it "strongly urged" the Scottish Government to do more to tackle the "fundamental problem" of overcrowding at the Glasgow facility following a week-long inspection last November.
