DECORAH, Iowa (KWWL) — St. Benedict School in Decorah cancelled classes Friday due to smoke in the building.

The Decorah fire department responded to an alarm at the Catholic school just after 6 a.m. this morning. Crews discovered heavy smoke and heat coming from a utility room in the school's lower level.

They found a large electrical service panel with extensive heat damage, and in addition to smoke throughout the building, elevated carbon monoxide levels were detected.

The electrical panel was extinguished and the building was ventilated. Damage to the building is undetermined at this time. Officials say the building was empty at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
