After seeing fourth-quarter leads slip away the past two years in the Hall Brawl, Holland Hall coach Brian Thompson went for the knockout blow when he saw the opportunity Friday night.
With nine minutes left, Thompson used a trick play called by assistant Cooper Gross as halfback James Jones' 7-yard touchdown pass to Mason Lilly sealed the sixth-ranked Dutch's 27-6 victory over No. 4 Cascia Hall in a Class 3A season opener at Hardesty Field.
"That was a good call in that moment," Thompson said. "Sometimes you get those and sometimes you don't. That was the right time."
Thompson didn't need to remind his players at halftime that Cascia had rallied to win the previous two Hall Brawls after trailing by double digits in the second half.
