HOUSTON (KIAH) — Dr. Theresa Tran Carapucci has been named as the interim director of the Houston Health Department, Mayor John Whitmire announced Saturday.

Dr. Tran will now have to be confirmed by City Council at Wednesday’s meeting to officially be named to the position. She will succeed Stephen Williams, who announced his retirement after 21 years of service to HHD.

Dr. Tran previously served as an associate vice president at UTHealth Houston where she combined her medical expertise with innovative leadership in community engagement, health research, administration and education. She also helped develop state and federal legislation.

“Dr. Tran’s leadership, experience and vision make her the right choice to guide the Houston Health Department at this important time,” Whitmire said.
