Today, Mauro Gibson, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a long time Roswell resident, is celebrating his 100th birthday.

The affable centenarian can often be found sitting at his “work station” at Lewis Truck and 4x4 on West Second Street, owned by his long-time friend Mark Lewis. In a deep, gravelly voice, Gibson will tell you he's “doing pretty good,” and has been hanging around at Lewis' shop for “quite a while.”

“Thirty years,” pipes in Mary Hattie, Gibson's nonagenarian companion and caretaker.

“His girlfriend,” Lewis adds with a grin.

“Whatever he needs from me, I am just looking to take care of him,” Hattie said.

“I'm still in good health, there is not a thing wrong with my health,” Gibson said. “I can still do a day's work; I've got good blood pressure.”
