Today is the first day of spring, and along the NSW coastline, dozens of shark nets are going into the water - even though some are soon to be removed again.
There will be 51 nets installed on beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong.
However, three coastal councils - Waverley, Northern Beaches, and Central Coast - are set to have the nets removed from one beach apiece in their respective LGAs.
The nets will still be installed for now, as decisions about which beaches in particular will take part in the trial are yet to be finalised.
The councils were asked to nominate one beach each to have the nets removed as part of a trial, but all have deferred the responsibility to the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
Shark nets are linked to environmental issues, including causing pr
