At least 250 people have been killed after a devastating earthquake hit Afghanistan overnight, officials say.

At least 500 other people are also believed to have been injured by the strong earthquake in the east of the country, close to the border with Pakistan.

A 6.0-magnitude quake struck at 11.47pm local time on Sunday night (August 31), affecting towns in the province of Kunar.

According to the US Geological Survey, it centred 17 miles away from the city of Jalalabad, in Nangarhar province, and was just five miles deep - with shallower quakes tending to cause more damage.
