New aurora forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that the colorful northern lights may be visible from more than a dozen states overnight Sept. 2-3.
That includes Washington state, much of which is inside NOAA's aurora "viewline," which represents the southernmost areas where the aurora borealis may be visible on the northern horizon. The model shows a " moderate " aurora forecasted between 4 p.m. and 4 a.m. PT, according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction website .
