MANCHESTER, N.H. —

New Hampshire has recorded a lot of whooping cough cases this year, especially among children.

The highly contagious illness starts out like a common cold but can quickly escalate to dangerous coughing fits.

Doctors at Elliot Hospital in Manchester said they have already seen 13 cases of whooping cough this year, mostly in children. With school back in session and cold season approaching, they expect numbers to rise.

The Holland family of Manchester said they became concerned about whooping cough when their 7-month-old daughter developed a nasty cough.

"She was coughing," said her father, Patrick Holland. "She couldn't catch her breath."
