BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One of the victims of a deadly fire in Morganton has been identified as both state and local agencies work to figure out what happened.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office, State Bureau of Investigations and the Burke County Fire Marshal's Office, along with other agencies from multiple counties, responded to a home on Swink Street in Morganton on August 31.

Officials say a fire broke out at the home, killing two people. One victim, Michael Curtis Hallyburton, 63, of Morganton, was found dead in the home. The identity of the second victim will be released pending the outcome of the autopsy.

Multiple dogs were found on the scene and have been taken into custody by Burke County Animal Services. No word on whether any animals were harmed in the fire.
