COLUMBUS, Ohio — Trash day is changing for about half of the households in Columbus getting trash picked up by the city’s Department of Public Service. The changes started this week and are due to the city’s growth.
“We've had some balanced routes that got unbalanced over the years because of growth in certain areas of the city,” said Tim Swauger, City of Columbus refuse administrator. “So routes began growing and growing and growing due to growth in those areas and our stations got unbalanced, meaning we had more routes and more trucks and more people than those stations could hold.”
Collecting the city’s garbage is a never-ending job. Columbus’ Department of Public Service collects the trash for about 340,000 households. From sun up to sun down, between 90 and 100 trucks roam the stree
