MINNESOTA, USA — Within six days of the Annunciation School shooting , Gov. Tim Walz is calling Minnesota lawmakers back to the Capitol for a special session focused on gun legislation.
Walz said the nation’s gun violence problem cannot be explained away by mental health or other factors alone.
“The thing that makes America unique in terms of shootings is, we just have more guns and the wrong types of guns that are on the street,” Walz said.
The Legislature is closely divided, with two pending special elections set to determine control. Walz said bipartisan cooperation will be necessary to advance any changes.
“I’m going to need some Republicans to break with the orthodoxy and say we need to do something on guns,” he said.
