Gov. Tim Walz has confirmed that he's calling a special session on gun legislation in response to the Annunciation Church and School shooting.

Walz visited Deerwood Elementary in Eagan on Tuesday to greet students and staff as they returned for a new school year. He also held a press conference outside the elementary school to officially announce the impending special session.

“If Minnesota lets this moment slide and we determine that it's OK for little ones to not be safe in a school environment or a church environment, then shame on us,” Walz said.

The shooting last Wednesday at Annunciation in Minneapolis killed two children, 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski, and injured 21 others – 18 of them children.
