CHICO, Calif. - Goats have started grazing between Manzanita Avenue and Highway 99 as part of the Lindo Channel Defensible Space Project.

According to the City of Chico, the initiative aims to reduce fire fuel loads and create defensible space along Lindo Channel. The project, funded by a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Program Grant, will not involve grazing within the channel waterway due to environmental regulations.

Capra Environmental Services Corp. is providing hundreds of goats for this effort, which are expected to graze around one acre per day. Safety measures include electric fences, warning signs and on-site supervision by a herdsman and guardian dogs 24/7.
