A resolution affirming the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District’s position ensuring the safety and protection of all students, regardless of immigration status, was adopted by the school board during its Tuesday night meeting.

Titled “Safe Spaces, Strong Futures: Standing with Our Immigrant School Community,” the resolution cites state and federal laws that forbid discrimination based on immigration or citizen status and ensure students’ rights to free public education.

The resolution does not change policy but reinforces the existing district code which protects students and staff in schools and their private information; board members spent hours debating proper wording to ensure that point was clear.
