DERIDDER, La. (KPLC) - A DeRidder family narrowly missed winning one of the largest lottery jackpots in U.S. history, but they still took home a hefty chunk of change.

John Stokes bought a Powerball ticket at Billie’s Wag-A-Bag on West First Street Monday, Louisiana Lottery spokesperson Jakeyla Chavis said. Before he and his family went to bed, they checked the winning numbers and found they had missed the $1.1 billion jackpot by just one number.

Stokes matched four of the white ball numbers and the red Powerball number, and since he had added the Power Play option, he tripled his winnings for a total prize of $150,000, Chavis said.

“We were shocked and feel so blessed,” Stokes said when claiming his prize with his family.

No one claimed Monday’s jackpot, and the prize has now grown
